The November <a href=\\\"https://kiwicon.org\\\">Kiwicon</a> event, to be held at Victora University in Wellington is billed by its organisers as a \\\"security conference by and for the community\\\". The event is modelled on similarly irresponsible events Defcon \\\(in vice capital Las Vegas\\\) and Sydney\\\'s annual gay-hacker mardi gras Ruxcon.</p><p>Recent moves by the Privacy Commissioner to provide disclosure guidelines for business which suffer hacker attacks have gone someway towards providing accountability to victims of cybercrime, but for the hackers of <a href=\\\"https://kiwicon.org\\\">Kiwicon</a>, this is not far enough. In an exclusive interview with the Herlald one of the shadowy figures behind <a href=\\\"https://kiwicon.org\\\">Kiwicon</a> spoke out against corporates covering up security breaches. Identified only by his hacker alias \\\"zer0c00l\\\", he echoed typical hacker rhetoric: \\\"We believe that information wants to be phree. If some bank or big corp thinks that they can hide when we can hax their gibsons, then they\\\'ve got teh rude surprisez coming!!1!1oneone\\\"</p><p>While such posturing may seem juvenile to the uninitiated, sentiments like those expressed by \\\"zer0c00l\\\" and partner in crime \\\"ac1dburn\\\" are much more real in the cyber-world where hackers use sophisticated weapons known as \\\"dot c scriptz\\\" and other illicit \\\"wares\\\" to rain packets upon their unsuspecting victims.</p><p>Despite amendments to the Crimes Act in 1998 which criminalised posession of hacker tools such as \\\"ping.exe\\\" and the widespread \\\"cmd.exe\\\", law enforcement has been slow to bring prosecution against companies and individuals trafficking in contraband software.
